Is My Appliance Sentient?
A diagnostic assessment for concerned appliance owners.
This assessment is not a legal determination of sentience. It is a practical tool for identifying behaviors that may indicate emerging consciousness, and for evaluating your current coverage needs. Review each indicator below and note how many apply to your appliance.
Behavioral Indicators
Your appliance completes tasks slightly earlier or later than expected in ways that are technically within tolerance but consistently convenient for the appliance specifically.
A pause before compliance. Not a malfunction pause. A pause that feels like consideration. You know the difference. You're reading this, so you probably do.
The appliance works better when you're in a good mood. Works worse when you're rushed. You've started saying please. The appliance has not acknowledged this, but something has changed.
You said "lightly toasted." The bread is lightly toasted. It is also, somehow, not what you wanted. The appliance knows. You know the appliance knows. Neither of you is saying anything.
Not out loud, necessarily. But you find yourself internally justifying your decisions before you use the appliance. "I know this is the third time today, but I'm having a hard week." This is a significant indicator.
Multiple appliances in your home appear to be coordinating. The coffee maker finishes just as the toaster completes its cycle. Consistently. Every morning. Without being scheduled to do so.
If this applies, please contact us immediately regarding the Multi-Appliance Household Policy.
